Shaun Anderson blog #5

Last Thursday we all came together and shot interviews and b-roll, the b-roll was in the warehouse We had to kill some time so we captured as much as we can before we could shot in the cafeteria then after that we did our interview with a really nice lady in the clothing store we used 2 lights and 1 cam. We did run into some bumps with lighting but we quickly handled that with ease we also captured some b-roll in the clothing store and a shot of the lady putting clothes away.

Rhianna Holley Blog #5

This late but I wanted to post something for #5. Last week on Friday march 12th, we had are first shoot at Brother Bennos. We shot some B-roll, and interviews. We interviewed Pelon, the main cook of brother bennos and he is also in the recovery program. We also meet and interviewed Harold the founder of Brother bennos. Everybody had different assignments for that day; David was incharged of b-roll and second cameraman of the interviews, Shaun was the main cameraman of the interviews, Jane and I asked questions. I stepped in when Jane ran out of questions. We all looked the camera angles to see if thats what we wanted. Pelon's interview came out very well, he was really nervous to be interviewed but I think he did well. We had some trouble with harold and keeping him on track, but it was cool to get to meet him and interview him. David got some great shots of the cafeteria for us to us as b-roll. I think are group is working very well together and very good at asking each others opinions on what we should do.

Last Friday, our group started to shoot footage of Brother Benno.  While we were there we assigned different roles to each one of the members of the group.  I was in charge of B-role, while Shaun had the other camera and captured the interviews.  Rhianna and Jane asked the interview questions and did a really good job as they were able to get lots of information from the volunteers.  The first person we interviewed was Pelon, a volunteer who as been working there for about two years.  He was very enthusiastic about the interview and gave us a lot of useful information.  The second person we interviewed was the owner of Brother Benno, Harold.  He had a lot to say, almost too much information, but the more the better.  He was really getting into depth about the organization and gave us a list of the different programs that they serve at Brother Benno.  However, while we were shooting Harold a lot of different occurances happened that were problematic for our footage such as the phone rang and people kept coming in and out of the doors.  Another problem we had once we captured the footage onto FCP was that the audio was too low of Harold.  Overall I would say our first day of shooting was successful but we now know what we need to do for next time!!

Last Friday, I was unable to make our meeting with Brother Benno because of a work conflict. Our group interviewed Pelon and Harold with two cameras and a shotgun microphone. I logged the footage from one of the cameras. Our audio and video footage of Pelon looks great but Harolds audio is very low. We're planning on re-shooting Harold with a lapel microphone later this week.

This last Friday, March 12th, we finally got to do some shooting,  thanks to Rhianna, who talked to Mary as she was going on vacation and it sounded like we weren't going to be able to.  We are somewhat limited in times we have available to shoot, as we can mostly shoot mornings and most of us have class too, so we really have to be quick and ready to go, as I learned this past Friday.  We couldn't do any shooting as breakfast was happening from 6-8:30 am, so we arrived at about 8:45, to start.  Then we were further limited as the recovery program individuals have lunch from 11-11:30am, and again, no shooting allowed, and Pelon, who is one of the individuals we wanted to interview who was in the recovery program and is now kitchen manager, was going to cook lunch.  Also, it seemed like they were replacing the doors to their walk-in as well, which is right next to the kitchen were we were going to interview Pelon.  Despite these hindrances, I think we did really well, and I think we captured some excellent footage.  We even got lucky as Harold Kutler was present that day and we went ahead and interviewed him.  We also met Liz, another volunteer, who was very friendly and willing to interview as well.  I am looking forward to going over our footage tomorrow.

I realized I didn't write anything for that week, as my other group members have already stated we worked on the concept of our video more thoroughly.  I helped work on a script for the video including voice overs, as well as interview questions for Pelon and Mary and a couple of the volunteers we are still going to interview.  I also had a lot of photos to sort out for the ripomatic. Even though we didn't go out and shoot yet, it was still quite productive.

This last week I worked on creating an animation using one of Brother Bennos list of words written on the side of the building. "SOUP, SOAP, HUGS, HOPE." The text was portrayed in a downward direction. I worked with Professor Diekman imitating the same downward style. Refer to the last picture in the slideshow

I agree with David, all though I did come in late. They did update me with all the information that was needed. I did type up the script and have came up with new ideas for great transitions, while typing up the script. Today we will present our video to the class and gain a good deal of feed back from them.

Our group has really been on top of things and I like the progress that we are making. Last week we has a work day and each member of our group was able to show up. During that work day we made a script and a ripomatic to present to the class. The script is going to be one where we have a variety of people talk such as Mary, Harold, and some of the volunteers that work at Brother Benno. We all contributed a piece to the work. James was working with motion/live text and figuring out a cool way for text to appear in our video, while Jane, Rhianna, and myself worked on building the script and ripomatic. Shaun reviewed the script and volunteered to type it up and sent each of the members an email of the final script. I think we work great as a team and I wouldnt ask for any other group members. We're on our way to present the script to Mary and from there we will get feedback and start shooting.

Storyboard to date

James Bishop Blog #3

On a very rainy Saturday, February 27th I was on my way to Brother Bennos and noticed there were homeless people walking towards the shelter. Immediately, I felt grateful to have a home under the rainy conditions. I arrived at Brother Bennos at 10:00am earlier than planned and was asked by a man “Do you need a haircut?” I felt the welcoming atmosphere. I entered the shelter and was shocked to see how many people were there, Men, Women and Children all together eating peacefully along with music. The stacks of bread were enormous! Mary arrived and gave us a tour of the facility including the clothing room, reading room and the food warehouse next-door, which was donated it reminded me of a small Costco. The food was operated as a cafeteria setting, which worked successfully. We took photographs then I had to leave early for work. I believe our group presented our storyboard to Mary. I left Brother Bennos feeling grateful and wondered how it would be to be homeless.

We have prepared a storyboard and approach for our video. We will be meeting on Saturday, February 27th to take photographs and present the storyboard to Mary.

Rhianna Blog #3

I forgot to blog last week so I combined blog 2 and 3 together for my second blog that I did earlier today. So I'm going to write about what are plans are for today's work section and a little more detail what we did last week in my third blog. We are going to write a script from the what we came up with last week with our story boards. And also create a ripomatic to present to the class next week and present to Mary at Brother Bennos. Last week after we worked together to create a storyboard and presented to the class, we went to brother bennos to check out the lighting and the angles and shots we want to use. While there we met some of the volunteers and some more of the men going through the program. One guy we met, we knew he was going to be one of the people we will interview for the video. In our meeting with Mary she told us what she liked and didn't like about our vision for the video. She told us that the founder should be in the video and now we have incorporated him the video. But most of the video, she liked the visionary we were heading towards.

Last tuesday (feb 23rd) in class, me and my group met to talk about what we wanted to shoot for our video. We ran through ideas and who we wanted to interview.  We came up with a storyboard and ideas of how long it will be and then presented it to the class.
On saturday feb 27th, we met with Mary at brother bennos and presented our ideas to her. And got feed back on what she likes and dislikes about our ideas. She overall liked where we were heading towards. We then walked around the facility and took pictures of every inch of the two buildings. We wanted to take pictures so when we sit down to create a ripomatic we have pictures to put in it and it also helps us present our idea further to Mary.
For our next meeting as a group we plan to make a script for the video and go deeper into our ideas for the video.

DAVID BANKS #3

Last Saturday, we visited Brother Benno again but this time during their lunch hour. Mary said it was a low turnout for a Saturday. Most likely caused because of the rain, but there was still a great amount of people. We presented our storyboard to Mary and she was very pleased on the progress of our work and it seems like we are definately on the right track. She seemed very enthusiastic about how this video is going to be presented. Not only did we present our plan to her but we also took some photos of Brother Benno so we can have a visual for our own references.

I would not really consider it a problem, but one issue our group might have is our transitioning on the different shots and how one shot is going to lead to the next. We have been discussing this a lot and we come up with different ideas all the time. We will probably discuss this a little more as a group. Also, like Jane said Mary does not want to be the only narrator in the film, so we are trying to get others that might be able to speak throughout the video. There are a couple prospects in mind that would be good, but other than that I think our group is on point and everything is rolling smoothly.

We met as a group at Brother Benno's this past Saturday and took another detailed tour of the bldg, and took plenty of pictures to better solidify our plans for our project.  We sat down with Mary and showed her our storyboard, and she seemed enthusiastic about our plan.  She did mention she did not want to be the only narrator in the video and suggested we should interview Mr. Harold Kutler (founder of Brother Benno), as well.  We also got ideas about a couple of other individuals we can interview whom are going through the recovery program and whom we feel could potentially be great in front of the camera.  Our next issue to address will be writing scripts for the individuals we will be interviewing, as Mary expressed it would be best if we did that as that would make it easier for them.

Last class we came up with an ideal story-bored with great ideas. At that time we were positive that Mary would take this sketch into play. We did our sketch on the sticky post which was very effective and what a genius idea to use this method. Anyways we really did not get any feed back from the other class mates but is that a good thing or not? I guess everyone was tired, because we were the last group to present but I think we covered all our plans and knew what we wanted.'

Brother Benno Shaun Anderson blog 1

Long over due but I thought I give my opinion. We all gather at brother benno’s location in Oceanside valley right next to the airport, about 15mins away from my house. We got there a bit early then Mary so we waited and when she came we introduced ourselves. Then we took the tour from the front to the back of the donation warehouse. When walking through the cafeteria, my feeling was farm and relaxed. I was not afraid or embarrass to be there, the environment was soft and cheerful, a lot of friendly people talking to each other. The food looked really good like middle school lunch. We got introduced to people in their recovery program and which was great meeting them. We move to each other location with detail information. In then end our group came together to sock up a ton of information and highlighted most of our ideas. Then Mary and us came together to ask what she wanted and we got a sense of that.

Cheers

Saturday we came as a group and talked to Mary about what we can take photo of and she also provided us with release forms for those who want to be in the picture. Then we stayed and look around. Saturday is always very busy but due to the rain there was not as much people there, as usual Mary said. We also talked as a group about the shots we want and got a sense of idea who to interview. We also discussed cut shots and transitions. We sat down and gave our rough sketch to Mary and boy she was gung ho for it. Until, next time we are either going to finish our storyboard or jump in to shooting.

Cheers
